What Are PFAS?

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. They are a class of more than 12,000 synthetic chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer manufacturing since the 1940s. The reason they became so widely used is the same reason they're so dangerous: they are extraordinarily resistant to heat, water, grease, and degradation.

That resistance means they don't break down in the environment. They don't break down in the human body either. They accumulate over time — in soil, in water, in wildlife, and in human tissue. This is why scientists and public health researchers call them "forever chemicals."

Where PFAS Are Hiding in Your Home

Most people associate PFAS with nonstick cookware, but the exposure footprint is far wider than a single frying pan. PFAS can be found in drinking water, food packaging such as grease-resistant paper and fast food containers, household products including stain and water-repellent treatments on carpets and upholstery, cleaning products, nonstick cookware, paints and sealants, and personal care products including certain shampoos, dental floss, and cosmetics. In the kitchen — Nonstick pans and bakeware coated with PTFE (commonly known as Teflon) contain PFAS. At least 143 million Americans — nearly half the U.S. population — have detectable levels of PFAS in their tap water. What PFAS Do to the Human Body

Because PFAS accumulate rather than break down, exposure is not a single event — it is a slow, ongoing buildup. Research on health effects is still developing, but the picture that has emerged is serious.

Current peer-reviewed scientific studies have shown that exposure to certain levels of PFAS may lead to reproductive effects such as decreased fertility or increased high blood pressure in pregnant women, developmental effects or delays in children including low birth weight and accelerated puberty, increased risk of some cancers including prostate, kidney, and testicular cancers, and reduced ability of the body's immune system to fight infections. New research published in February 2026 found that two PFAS compounds — PFNA and PFOSA — were detected in 95% of study participants and were strongly linked to faster biological aging, particularly in middle-aged men. Children are particularly vulnerable. Because children are still developing, they may be more sensitive to the harmful effects of PFAS. How Widespread Is the Problem?

The scale of PFAS contamination in the United States is larger than most people realize — and much larger than government data has historically captured. Research from Northeastern University's PFAS Project Lab found that while there are approximately 2,200 known sites of PFAS contamination in the U.S., there are close to another 80,000 likely contaminated sites that have not yet been formally identified. The lab found that 94% of known PFAS contamination sites had average groundwater concentrations above accepted regulatory levels. The "PFOA-Free" Problem

If the pattern with BPA sounds familiar, it should be. When PFOA and PFOS — the two most studied PFAS chemicals — came under regulatory scrutiny and were eventually phased out in the United States, manufacturers replaced them with shorter-chain PFAS alternatives. These alternatives were newer, less studied, and initially assumed to be safer.

Emerging research now suggests that short-chain replacements for PFOA and PFOS may also raise health concerns. nih A product labeled "PFOA-free" or "PFOS-free" may still contain other PFAS compounds. Unless a product is explicitly labeled PFAS-free — and can back that claim with verified testing — the label tells you only that one specific chemical was removed, not that the product is free of the broader chemical class.

This is the same regrettable substitution problem that created the BPA-free trap. The chemicals change. The pattern does not.


What the Regulatory Landscape Looks Like in 2026

Regulation of PFAS has historically lagged far behind the science, but momentum is building — primarily at the state level.

In 2025, nearly 350 PFAS bills were introduced across 39 states. States enacted a range of bans on PFAS in consumer products including cookware, food packaging, textiles, and firefighting foam, with several laws phasing in restrictions through 2032. MultiState

Minnesota became the first state to ban nonstick cookware coated with PFAS as of January 2025. Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Colorado are moving ahead with similar bans or restrictions on cookware, with enforcement dates ranging from 2026 to 2028.

The regulatory gap, however, remains significant. There is still no federal limit on the total number of PFAS compounds permitted in consumer products. Waiting for comprehensive federal regulation before making changes at home means continuing exposure during a period when the science is becoming harder to ignore.


How to Reduce Your PFAS Exposure

You cannot eliminate PFAS exposure entirely — they are too widespread in the environment and the food supply for that to be a realistic goal. But you can meaningfully reduce your daily exposure through product and material choices. The highest-impact swaps are:

In the kitchen — Replace nonstick cookware with cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic cookware that is explicitly labeled PFAS-free. Avoid microwaving food in its packaging. Transfer fast food and takeout to your own dishes quickly rather than letting it sit in treated containers. Use a high-quality water filter certified for PFAS reduction.

In the bathroom — Check cosmetics using the EWG Skin Deep database before purchasing. Look for products labeled PFAS-free rather than just PFOA-free. Be particularly cautious with long-wear and waterproof formulas for foundations, concealers, and mascaras.

In the home — Vacuum regularly using a HEPA filter to reduce PFAS dust accumulation from treated carpets and fabrics. Avoid applying additional stain-resistant or waterproofing sprays to furniture, carpets, or clothing unless they are explicitly labeled PFAS-free.

When shopping for clothing and gear — Look for brands that have made public PFAS-free commitments. Brands including Patagonia and KEEN have announced commitments to remove PFAS from their supply chains. Be cautious of anything marketed as stain-resistant, wrinkle-resistant, or water-resistant without a PFAS-free label.

Everything above applies to every person in every household. But if you have a baby or young child, the stakes are compounded. Children are biologically more vulnerable to the effects of toxic chemicals, are exposed through more pathways per pound of body weight, and are building the organ systems — immune, hormonal, neurological — that PFAS are most documented to disrupt.
